Ode To
Self-realisation
Iqbal ( 1877 – 1938 )’s Ghazal
When devotion to Divinity teaches manners of
self-realisation,
Slaves learn discipline of becoming sovereign,
Whether it is Attar, Roomi, Razi or Ghazali,
Nothing comes to hand without the pre-dawn lamentation,
Don’t get disappointed of them O the wise leader!
Though less responsive, but the devotees are not without
passion,
O the mystical falcon! Death is preferable
to the sustenance,
That which causes indiscretion of thy mind-soul,
That destitute person is better than Alexander and Darius,
Whose destitution has the tinge of Ali’s piousness,
Discipline of the men of might is truthfulness and audacity,
The lions of Allah do not profess fox-like policy.
